The quiet cost of January optimism.
One of the things I used to love most about the start of a new school year was the idea of starting with a fresh slate. Back when I was teaching, Term 4 usually had me hobbling to the finish line, so when Term 1 of the new year rolled around, it felt like a reset, an opportunity to reimagine, to do a few things differently, and to learn from the previous year.
A question worth paying attention to: “Miss, what’s the point of this?”
The hard truth is this: we can have all the programs, strategies and frameworks. We can say we’re preparing students for an evolving future on our websites and marketing collateral. We can deliver a compliant and high-quality curriculum, supported by cutting edge technologies and pedagogies. But if the student sitting in front of us still can’t see the value in what they’re learning and still feels lost or disconnected...well then, I think I’m with the kids on this one. What is the point?
